Netflix Password Sharing In Trouble

It’s no surprise that people share their password to their Netflix. I think we all know that one person who actually pays for the account, while everyone else just uses it. It’s the way it’s always been, and every streaming service is like this. But Netflix might be trying to change that.

In a recent poll it was found that 44.4% of users admitted to sharing their password to someone outside of their household. On average people shared their passwords to 2.3 people. So, obviously this doesn’t make Netflix happy.

They’ve started rolling out a pop-up in certain markets asking if you live with the account owner. Now as of right now, you can easily just say you’ll answer the question later and then continue watching. But Netflix is planning on charging the main account $2.99 for every out of household viewer. And they’re going to be testing this in markets outside of the US.

They’re trying to gain profits back from password sharing, without completely getting rid of password sharing. Odd, but most people who don’t pay now for Netflix are pretty open about how they don’t want to pay anything for it. So, they think this might be a solution to gaining some profit off of them without losing a massive viewership. It’ll be interesting how this all turns out.
